OUR FOUNDING FATHER

Mielech Katz: The Visionary Behind Our Legacy

In 1906, Mielech Katz, a Jewish immigrant from Galicia, a region that was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now divided between Poland and Ukraine, laid the foundation for Katz Furniture. Fleeing poverty and persecution in late 19th-century Galicia, Mielech and many other Jewish immigrants sought new opportunities and a better life in America.

SETTING ROOTS IN THE LOWER EAST SIDE

From Tenement Apartment to a Century-Old Legacy

Mielech started his furniture business from his tenement apartment in the historic Lower East Side of New York City. This vibrant neighborhood, rich in Jewish history and culture, was home to many Jewish family businesses that played a significant role in the community’s growth and development. For over a century, Katz Furniture has proudly maintained a presence in this iconic area, preserving the values and traditions that have been at the heart of our success.
